Choosing a pet for Christmas
Have the kids been hassling you about a new cat, dog, rabbit or other new pet? Christmas may seem the ideal time to decide to buy a pet, but it may not be the ideal time to think rationally about what the long term commitment involves. An impulse purchase can have some long term consequences. Are you ready to commit to the responsibility of pet ownership?

Choose New Zealand Cruelty Free Skincare
margarethemahemalogo Many of the most famous cosmetics brands use extensive animal testing on their products. Their 'hope in a jar' includes preservatives, colourings and fragrances that may still cause allergic reactions despite animals suffering to ensure that they are fit for humans to apply to their skin. Mice die when each batch of botox is produced, rabbits suffer to ensure that face cream doesn't sting your eyes.

Norm Hewitt takes the SPCA message to Schools
norm_liz_huna One of the Family is an education initiative launched by the SPCA to take empathy education to schools around New Zealand. Norm Hewitt and SPCA education officers will be meeting with intermediate age children to encourage them to treat animals as one of the family.
'One of the Family' is ongoing and schools throughout New Zealand will be contacted to offer the opportunity for classes to participate in the program.
Helping One helps the Other
boy_cat_eyeNorm Hewitt and the SPCA are taking a stand against animal abuse. Research shows strong links between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence. Teaching children empathy through compassion for animals can encourage the same behaviour towards humans. Our inschool program led by Norm Hewitt will teach children positive behavoiurs. SPCA recieve no Government funding to do this so need your support. To learn more about this campaign or to donate visit the One of the Family website at www.oneofthefamily.co.nz

More than 5000 animals desexed in the SPCA mobile clinic
desex_clinic
Now well into the second year of operation, the SPCA mobile clinic has achieved more than 5000 free de sexing operations for animals of low income owners. Roving vet and vet nurse wife Sue visited Tauranga, Waihi, Gisborne, Te Puia Springs, Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Auckland, Waikato, Ngarawahia and Matakana Island.  They have just returned to Gisborne and will spend December in Tauranga.. The clinic will be returning to Wellington for the month of January 2008. Good news is that the effects of this activity and other de sexing initiatives around the country have resulted in the first ever reduction in the annual numbers of stray and unwanted animals sheltered by the SPCA.
